Nothing holds her back!
Leila is a sweet older lady with a story that truly touches the heart, a misunderstood dog who has been through more than most. She came to us in 2025 from a government-funded shelter, carrying both physical and emotional weight. Severely overweight at over 30kg, and with habits shaped by life in a busy kennel environment, Leila had a lot to work through. But none of that defines who she really is. Because if you ask Leila… she’s a lap dog. She absolutely adores people! She’ll follow you everywhere, always wanting to be close, always hoping for a bit of attention (or a sneaky snack!). She’s wonderfully clumsy, often bumping into volunteers in her excitement, and when she plays, you’d never believe she’s around 10 years old. In her mind, she’s still a young dog, full of life, zooming around in circles with pure joy.
Sadly, not long after arriving, Leila was diagnosed with Dirofilariasis – a common parasite in the Canary Islands spread by mosquitoes that affects the heart and lungs. In Leila’s case, the burden was severe and we explored every option. Our team worked closely with specialist cardiologists and experts in this condition, but the treatment needed to eliminate the parasites proved too risky for her already weakened heart. After careful consideration, the decision was made to focus on supportive management instead, prioritising her comfort and quality of life.
Since then, our volunteers and vets have worked tirelessly to monitor her and keep her stable. But Leila? She doesn’t know any of this. She’s still the same happy, affectionate girl, tail always wagging, trying to steal your food, and chasing you around with endless enthusiasm. Leila is living proof that even after everything, a dog can still choose joy. All she wants is love, comfort, and someone to share her days with.
