Her life has turned upside down
Gucci is an 8-year-old Shar Pei and her past is different from many of the dogs who come to us. She was deeply loved by her family and they didn’t want to let her go. They were absolutely devastated when they brought her to us. But sadly, due to changes in their housing situation, they were left with no choice. And so, her story is just as heartbreaking.
In just a few days, we watched her world turn upside down. One moment she was a pampered family pet, sleeping in a home, surrounded by familiar people and routines. The next, she found herself in a shelter environment, trying to make sense of what happened. Gucci is not a dog who will thrive in a kennel long-term. Like many Shar Peis, she has sensitive skin and her breed is not particularly suited to the dusty environment. We are already concerned that the longer she stays with us, the harder it will become for both her emotional wellbeing and her skin.
Gucci is loving with people and has lived happily around children in her previous home. She is good with other dogs, particularly off lead, but can be more nervous on lead. She is not suitable for a home with cats. She can also be sensitive about her ears and can become worried during veterinary handling. When uncomfortable, she gives clear warning signals, such as a growl, to communicate that she is feeling scared. However, it’s important to note that we have been told she has never bitten a person or another dog.
To us, Gucci isn’t a difficult dog. Just one who is frightened, confused, and grieving the loss of the only home she has ever known. What Gucci needs now is an experienced and patient home, ideally with someone familiar with the breed or willing to learn about their needs. Someone who can give her the time, understanding, and security she needs to settle back into herself.
